Art prints

Art prints come in a variety of mediums and include limited edition fine art prints, giclee prints, poster prints and other prints on paper. The right frame can greatly accentuate your artwork, but if you don’t know what you’d like, we’ll be happy to offer suggestions based on your art!

Framing methods

Direct framing is a method where the frame goes directly around the artwork, no matboards are used and the glazing will rest directly on the print. This is the most economical form of framing but is not the most protective method because with our humid climate, water may condense on the inside of the glass and mould may occur and get transferred to the art print.

This method is suitable for prints of no commercial or sentimental value such as movie or decorative posters.

Framed using direct framing method

Our recommended method is to frame with matboards. This is a more popular framing option where the matboard provides visual breathing space around your art piece and the result is more aesthetically pleasing. Having a matboard will also lift the glass away from the print to prevent mould transfers from the glass to the print over time.

To add a sense of depth, we can have the print float mounted within a shadow box frame for a modern look. If you’d like to see more framing examples for inspiration, click here.

Conservation

Fine art print, high-quality giclee print, or any print that is original or limited edition will require good framing techniques and archival-quality materials that are important for art preservation.

It is good practice to include acid-free matboards when framing, so that the glazing will not rest directly on the artwork. This helps to prevent damage by condensation caused by our humid climate, which may result in mould being transferred from the glass to your artwork. For better preservation of the artwork, we have options for acid-free matboards, pH-neutral alpha cellulose museum boards, inert and acid-free backing boards for this purpose.

Artworks on paper are often sensitive to light. For better preservation and to protect the colours from fading, you can also consider these glazing options with UV protection:

  • Plexiglas® UV100 (99.7% UV protection, shatter resistant)
  • TruVue Conservation Clear® Glass (99% UV protection)
  • Artglass AR 99 Water White (99% UV protection, anti-reflective)
  • Artglass Lifetime Acrylic / TruVue Optium Museum Acrylic® (99% UV protection, anti-reflective, abrasion resistant, anti-static, shatter resistant)
